Basic Belay

  • Split silks and create equal footlocks
  • Crossback (any style, noting which silk is closest to your back) and straddle-invert
  • Follow the silk that is closest to your back to the wrapped foot, bring that foot in front of the poles, unwrap that foot while keeping tension on the tail close to body (this is a break)
  • Bring body through the poles, while giving slack to the silk in the break hand, creating a loop for your body
  • Holding tails, you may unwrap your remaining footlock and step on the silks in a break (or keep it locked), pose
  • With feet creating break, slide body down and through the belay loop, once head and shoulders are through, pull on tails below the belay to find the one that is creating the loop, pull to remove loop
  • Grab poles above the slack, let go of footlock or break

TIP: Be sure to break on both tails. One of them is regular but the other one has slack. If you mistake which is which, you may stand on the one with slack and when you take the belay loop out, you could slide or fall.
